In Year 12, I took part in LSE Springboard, where I received personalised feedback on my personal statement from an LSE admissions tutor — someone who reads and admits students. LSE cares more about the personal statement than any other university, so getting this insight really shaped my approach.
I spent countless hours on my personal statement (probs too many) but I learnt a lot. Hopefully this guide helps you avoid the mistakes I made, and write something sharp, original, and focused.

The Personal Statement which helped me get into Cambridge

Aim: Start with a hook that introduces your theme and interest.
Begin with a genuine and personal opening line
Example: “I am frustrated with the governance of Britain.”
Introduce your area of interest and why it matters
Give your unique, independent opinions on key debates/issues
Show your desire to understand the subject in depth
Aim: Showcase the depth of your independent engagement with the subject through supercurriculars
